Issue at hand: Should we become a republic?
|
The republic is an issue that has been around since 1975, when the Labor Prime Minister
at the time was sacked by the Governor - General, Sir John Kerr. This was due to the
blocking of the supply bill to the Government by the leader of the opposition, Malcom
Fraser. Since then, the Governor - General?s role in Australia?s federation has been
greatly questioned.
